kidnapped

The Nigerian Medical Association has threatened to take a drastic action if the attacks on medical doctors in Rivers State are not checked

Rivers state chapter Chairman of the NMA, Furo Green issued the threat following the death of one of the kidnapped doctors, Doctor John Opara, whose body was dumped at a cassava farm in Borokiri area of Port harcourt.Dr. John Opara was abducted last week at his private hospital at D-Line in Port Harcourt.

Green told newsmen that the government, security agencies and the general public had not lived up to expectation in condemning the attacks on doctors.
He said the NMA had resolved to carry out skeletal activities within the period of mourning their killed colleague.
“Within the last 6 days, four doctors have been attacked in Port Harcourt. Three of them were severely injured and tortured but the last of them Dr. Opara was murdered by his captors and his body was dumped at a cassava farm in the Borokiri axis of Port Harcourt.

“The worst has happened. Our fears has come to pass. Our deceased colleague was whisked away from his hospital alive but was returned dead to a cassava farm.

We are deeply pained and we wonder if this is the way the society should treat loved ones. It is very unfortunate that the people we labour to serve are the same people who are trying to annihilate us.

“As I speak with you, four other doctors have been threatened by SMS. We have taken our fates in our hands. We shall no longer guarantee the availability of doctors to attend to their clients,” Dr. Green said.

On his part, a senior doctor and former chairman of the NMA, Ibitrokoemi Korubo said doctors will no longer tolerate any abuse of their members.

DWN reports that while the NMA was briefing newsmen, a report came that another medical officer is at the emergency unit of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital with severe gun shot wounds after a failed kidnap attempt at Emohua.

God have mercy, what could be the reason for all these attacks against doctors...?
